Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

It is the policy of Strayer University to afford qualified students with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, an equal opportunity to participate in, and thus benefit from, all programs, services, and activities of the University. This includes, but is not limited to, providing appropriate academic adjustments and auxiliary aids and services for persons with disabilities as defined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA); and applicable federal and state nondiscrimination laws.

Strayer University does not discriminate on the basis of disability and provides qualified students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in the University’s programs through appropriate academic adjustments and the provision of auxiliary aids. The University accepts requests for accommodations from students with various disabilities including learning or intellectual disabilities. The University seeks to enhance a students’ chance of success within the classroom by offering accommodations, including , not limited to, use of a note taker; extended time on exams; extended time on assignments; use of a calculator; provision to take tests in separate location and the permission to use a tape recorder in class. A disabled student is not required to disclose his/her disability to the University unless the student wishes the University to provide a reasonable accommodation. For assistance, students with disabilities desiring special accommodations should contact the Director of Disability Services.

Accommodations can only be ensured by the first day of classes if requested at least thirty (30) calendar days prior to the start of the quarter. However, the University will put interim accommodations in place to the extent possible for requests received less than thirty (30) calendar days in advance.

Process for Requesting Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

The first step in the accommodation process is for the student to complete a “Students with Disabilities Intake Form,” providing the University information about the disability, a “Student Instructional Accommodation Request Form,” which identifies the accommodations the student is requesting, and medical documentation supporting the diagnosis. The above-mentioned forms and documentation are forwarded to the Director Services of Disability Services, who serves as the University’s Section 504 coordinator. The Director of Disability Services will review the preceding and contact the student if additional information is required. Once the relevant information is received, the Director of Disability Services will consult with the Campus Dean of the student’s home campus or, for Strayer University Online students, the Campus Dean for Strayer University Online. The Director of Disability Services will then issue the student a letter indicating whether the student is determined to be a qualified student with a disability and, if applicable, the accommodations the University will provide to the student. After accommodations have been arranged, the Campus Dean and the Director of Disability Services will contact the student’s instructors by the first day of classes each quarter informing them of the special accommodations to be made.

At any time, students having difficulty with the accommodation process or having any questions about the University’s policies for students with disabilities may contact the Director of Disability Services at:
